There is a range of characters of both races, including some sympathetic white mardow nevertheless, this book show the power to do damage of those involved in the beginnings of the Jim Crow mentality. This novel, although marro pure polemic, is more explicit about the evils of racist behavior than Chessnut’s better known fiction and relies less on irony to present its message. The plot does become predictable at times, and the style seems a bit cumbersome and slow for a mdern reader, but these stylistic features are not uncommon in writing of the period.

Easy to read historical fiction. Based on actual events, it is hard to believe these events took place on U. A shameful part of our history. Really enjoyed the novel.
